When did the yoga bug bite you?

After my second class (2000). My first class was such a snoozer I thought there was no way I could get any benefit out of yoga. But luckily, I had a very persistent friend and she kept on dragging to different places. Yup, my second class I was hooked! Now I drag her all over town for yoga!

When did you open your studio?  Rescue Yoga officially opened its doors June 19, 2009. However Rescue Yoga has been active in many locations in Carrollton since 2007.

Did you always want to own a studio?

No, but I was really interested in teaching yoga that was healing in nature and less focused on spiritual aspects of getting the body into superstar athletic shape. I wanted to provide a place for the community to feel comfortable and be able to escape for a short time.

What kind of vibe do you go for at your studio?

I guess it's sort of a healing humor vibe. I like to help people get in touch with who they are today, without having to hold back because of some preconceived notion of who society tells them to be or what they should look like.

What’s the best and worst part of owning a studio?

Best is definitely having everyone walk out with smiles on their faces, knowing I have done everything in my ability to provide them with the best possible yoga experience. Worst, hmmm. I’m going to have to go with taxes, because everything else is fabulous!

From where do you draw inspiration?

My students inspire me to explore new therapeutic poses for them. I find ideas all over for my “Savasana Speeches”. I rarely let anyone lay in silence, just to remind them we are all in this together and I truly care for them. I can get inspired by a song, a picture, a chain email, just where ever. I try to stay really receptive for that. I have found that these opportunities are usually very ordinary, dressed in overalls and a ball cap if you will.

How do you stay fresh and positive when the “business” of yoga gets you down?

Teach, Teach, Teach! Yup, teaching is my business therapy!  It reminds me of my purpose.

                        Favorite and least favorite pose?

Well, I don’t know all of the poses yoga has to offer, so I really can’t say for sure what my favorite and least favorite poses are. Of the poses I am familiar with, my favorite pose (today anyway) is Reverse Half Moon and my least favorite is Cow Face Pose.

What would you like the curious public to know about you and/or your studio?

That I am just like them. I come with a complete package of flaws, injuries and bad habits. (Sometimes I swear in class or drink soda, yeah, terrible I know.) However my heart is big and I am genuinely concerned for them. I will always strive to give you what you need from Rescue Yoga, even if it’s a kick in the rump! I looked around the yoga community in the North Dallas area and saw one thing missing. Baby boomers didn’t have anywhere to go that they could get a beginners yoga class any day of the week! So, that’s what we specialize in. Every class is suitable for beginners, no matter what age group you’re in! That is my specialty and the whole purpose of Rescue Yoga.

                        Rescue Yoga Mission

"My mission is to reduce stress, ease pain and bring peace back into peoples lives by reminding them of the natural balance they have within them all the time. Using yoga as a health care management system, we can unify the mind, body and breath to increase overall well being and health."   --Jenny
